At this point in the lab we are adding Sodium Hydroxide to our solution of Cupric Nitrate. This causes the Copper and Sodium to Double Replace and create Cupric Nitrate (a precipitate) and Sodium Hydroxide. The white solid you see in the bottom of the photo is the precipitate.
We are demonstrating our Striving for Accuracy habit of mind here by carefully adding one more drop of NaOH to make sure all the precipitate has formed.
